Tips for a smooth teletherapy session
Device
For video sessions, I recommend a laptop or desktop computer with a camera and microphone. Tablets and smartphones are less optimal due to their smaller screen sizes.
Privacy
Ensure that you have a secure, private space for your session where you feel safe and comfortable. The fewer distractions and interruptions, the better!
Internet connection
Make sure you have a strong internet connection with high bandwidth. When possible, it’s helpful to use an ethernet cord to connect directly to the internet.
Technical difficulties
Test out your connection ahead of the session. Make sure you’re connected to the internet and that the correct camera and microphone are connected.
Audio
I recommend using headphones that plug directly into your device for a better audio connection. Headphones also assist with privacy during your session. Noise cancelling headphones are great, too!
Video
Don’t sit with a light source directly behind you (i.e., in front of a window or lamp) - this will make it difficult for me to see your face, and I really want to see your face!
Have a back up plan
Keep your cell phone handy during our session, even if you’re using your laptop or another device for video. If our connection drops unexpectedly, we can have a phone session as a back up.
Software updates
If you have your device set to update automatically, make sure that those updates occur during a time other than our scheduled session so that we have minimal interruptions.
Close other programs
Ensure no other programs are using your device’s microphone or camera by closing out other open applications. It’s also helpful to close out open tabs in your browser.
Don’t try to multitask
Set this time aside to devote to yourself. You deserve it. You will get more out of our session if you are present and focused.
Battery
If you’re not connected to a power source, make sure that your device has enough charge for us to conduct our session.
Be open to the experience
Teletherapy may be new for you but you’ve taken the huge step to schedule a session. You owe it to yourself to relax and bring your whole self to our appointment.
